Editing Closures (UE)

The Closures tab is where the character’s closures can be refined. Closures are consonants in which two parts of the oral anatomy come into contact. For an overview, see the Closures article in SGX Concepts.

The Closures tab includes three closures: bilabial (b, p, m), dental (th, dh) and labiodental (f, v). Each closure is described in terms of the parts of the anatomy forming the closure. For example, in the case of bilabials, it is the upper lip and lower lip. When one of the closures is selected, a set of sample poses is listed, each with a scale slider.

Selecting one of the closure poses displays the pose on the character. If there is undershoot or overshoot, the pose can be adjusted by simply moving the slider, which scales the muscle activations that produce the closure. The goal is to achieve firm contact: no gap between the two vocal organs, but also not too much interpenetration between them.

Be sure to check all of the poses in each of the three closures, and adjust them if necessary.

After adjustements are made, they will be made permanent the next time the character control file is saved. Below is a short demonstration of this tool being used.
