When editing base poses of the lips, be careful not to include any displacement of the jaw or tongue.
adduction__
The upper lip rolls down and inward, M-like. The mouth corners rise up and slide back. The upper lip becomes horizontally level. The lower lip sympathetically rises and rolls into the mouth, though not as much as the upper lip. The upper and lower lip come into complete contact, without interpenetrating. Note the accompanying movement in the chin, cheeks, philtrum area, and nose. |
adduction__25pct
The action of adduction at 25%. The lips come into complete contact. |
adduction__50pct
The action of adduction at 50% (with a less open jaw). The lips come into complete contact. |
adduction__jaw_near
The action of adduction, but with the jaw even more closed. The lips press against each other and are compressed due to the lack of space. This causes some bulging in the mouth area surrounding the lips. |
compression__
The lips are pursed without protrusion. The lower lip is more active than the upper lip, and is slightly bowed in the middle, forming a dip. There is dimpling at the sides of the mouth. |
compression__jaw_near
Compression with the jaw closed. The lips come into complete contact. |
lip_flare__
Known in FACS as Lip Funneler, SH-like. Note the curvature and flared protrusion in both lips, with some thinning in the upper lip. There is movement in the nose, chin, and lower cheeks. |
lip_flare__jaw_open
The effect of lip_flare while the jaw is open. |
lip_seal__
The upper and lower lips are drawn together passively to seal the gap between them. |
lower_lip_pull__
The lower lip is pulled down, exposing the gumline. The lower lip flattens a bit in the front-back dimension, and it develops an angular shape at the wings. Note the accompanying movement of the chin and lower cheeks. |
lower_lip_pull__jaw_wide
The effect of lower_lip_pull with the jaw fully open. |
lower_lip_push__
The lower lip is pushed up passively by action in the chin. It comes into complete contact with the upper lip, but without interpenetration. |
lower_lip_push__50pct
The action of lower_lip_push to 50% (with a less open jaw). The lower lip comes into complete contact with the upper lip, without interpenetration. |
lower_lip_tuck__
The corners of the mouth pull up and back, and the lower lip is pulled well into the mouth, rolling over the lower teeth. The lower lip is in the bite space between the teeth; make sure the upper teeth are in contact with the skin. The chin follows the lower lip. As the corners move up and back, the upper lip levels out horizontally, and the upper cheeks puff out a bit. This movement is F-like. |
lower_lip_tuck__50pct
The effect of lower_lip_tuck to 50%, with the lower lip precisely touching the edge of the upper teeth. |
lower_lip_tuck__jaw_open
The effect of lower_lip_tuck, with a more open jaw position. The lower lip rolls around the lower teeth but does not touch the upper teeth due to the dropped jaw. |
pinching__
The mouth corners are strongly compressed and pulled back into the face, causing dimpling. The upper lip protrudes and becomes somewhat rigid and thin. There is also action in the chin, throat, cheeks, and nose. |
pinching__jaw_open
The action of pinching with a more open jaw. The lips move vertically to accomplish the pinching action at the sides: the lower lip elevates, and the upper lip descends slightly, especially at the sides. Both lips become somewhat bowed. This action is R-like. |
retraction__
The mouth corners are retracted towards the cheekbones (up, back and wide). The lips stretch lengthwise and flatten against the teeth, and both lips elevate a few millimeters. Some gaps may form between the upper and lower lips at the wings. The upper cheeks bulge and even the lower eyelid is affected. The nose wings widen The chin moves up and out. Note this is not a true smile: only Zygomaticus major is activated, so there is no 'eye smiling'. Thus it may look like a fake or incomplete smile. |
retraction__jaw_wide
The effect of retraction with the jaw completely open. Note the shape of the mouth corners, lower lip and upper lip. |
rounding__
The lips are puckered. The corners of the mouth draw together and the lips are thrust forward, U-like. The lower lip folds in the center to produce a small hole. The cheeks, chin and nose are affected. |
rounding__25pct
Rounding at 25 percent. The lips should be in contact with each other. |
rounding__compression
Something midway between rounding and compression. |
rounding__compression__jaw_open
Something midway between rounding and compression, in the context of a more open jaw. |
rounding__jaw_open
The movement of rounding but with the jaw open. Given the extra space, the lips travel more vertically towards each other, forming a smaller and smaller central round-ish hole as they do so, and with slighlty less compression and protrusion than when the jaw is completely closed. |
rounding__jaw_wide
The effect of rounding with the jaw completely open. The lips travel considerably farther to form a round hole, especially the upper lip. |
rounding__retraction
The combined effect of rounding and retraction. The results of two antagonistic muscles trying to pucker and spread the lips at the same time. The lips are less protruded, more spread and flattened against the teeth than in rounding alone. |
rounding__retraction__jaw_open
The combined effect of rounding and retraction, with the jaw somewhat open. |
upper_lip_pull__
The upper lip is pulled upward at attachment points aligned with the outside of the nose, forming a square shape in the upper lip with some sagging in the center. There is significant movement in the cheeks, naso-labial folds and nose wings. The mouth corners are slightly affected but the lower lip is not. |
upper_lip_pull__jaw_wide
The effect of upper_lip_pull with the jaw fully open. Note the jaw opening pulls down slightly at the sides of the upper lip, countering some of the upper lip raising. |
